Review words when they are due

Recall before revealing the answer, then let FSRS schedule the next review.

Complete a review session

  1. Open Review to see available due or new cards. The word list and current device determine what can be offered.
  2. Read the prompt and answer using the input it offers. Book recall can show meanings, phrases and examples with the target word hidden.
  3. Reveal or submit as the card requires, compare with the accepted answer, and use the available review rating controls. The saved rating updates the next due time.
  4. Continue to the next card. If saving or refreshing fails, use Retry rather than repeatedly rating the same answer. A completed rating should not need to be entered again.

Why prompts differ between words and devices

Review first uses the exact attached book material when that book, version and word can be resolved. It shows the complete material with target forms hidden until reveal. If that material is unavailable, Review can use an explicitly published question.

Only after both sources are unavailable can a ready dictionary entry become the final masked prompt. Desktop can use an installed local dictionary or a supported online component; the browser can use AALookup’s public dictionary. The answer remains the saved word, not a different dictionary headword or synonym. Third-party embedded pages and links cannot serve as these prompts.

If no permitted source is available, the app reports that no question is available and does not record an FSRS rating. It does not make a question from your note, captured sentence or another book just because the spelling matches.

Prepare for offline review

  • Open the relevant book or material while online so it can be available on the device.
  • For offline dictionary prompts on desktop, prepare the local dictionary first. Online dictionary entries still need a working connection unless their content is already available on the device.
  • A synchronized word does not imply that its publisher content or dictionary files were synchronized too.
  • Words marked mastered or suspended need to be managed in Words if you want to change their learning status.
