A simpler start, smoother lookups, and pronunciation with your system voices

Added

  • On desktop, lookup triggers now include mouse side buttons and pressing a modifier key three times. On Windows, supported mouse triggers can optionally be intercepted so the triggering click does not also reach the app beneath it.
  • On desktop, select text inside a local dictionary result in Search to preview a matching entry from the same dictionary. When no entry matches, a small toolbar lets you search the selection or hear it pronounced while keeping your reading position.
  • On desktop, the lookup panel can pronounce words automatically or on demand using installed system voices. Settings now saves automatic pronunciation, language and accent, voice, and speaking speed. Pronunciation text is not sent to an online service.

Improved

  • On desktop, Getting Started brings permissions, lookup triggers, text recognition, and dictionaries into one preparation checklist. Import your own dictionaries or download one there, then start using the app when setup is ready; practice tutorials are optional. The guide shows your current shortcuts and gestures.
  • On desktop, the main window has a more compact layout with integrated window controls and a simpler search home, giving dictionary content more room.

It answers from aalookup.com for a signed-in account, completes words in the search box, and grows every day as new words are added on the server.
  • macOS A small spinner appears beside the pointer from the moment a lookup starts until the panel is on screen.

Fixed

  • An online dictionary with nothing for a word no longer shows an empty row, so a word every dictionary misses shows the no-entry state again; and an online dictionary removed from the collection can be downloaded again from the catalog instead of being reported as already installed.
  • macOS A pointer lookup in Chromium-based apps such as Claude Desktop no longer returns a word from elsewhere on the page: an accessibility answer the app cannot place under the pointer now waits for OCR to read the same pixels, and the OCR word wins when it sits under the pointer and reads differently. The pixel check at gesture time, which had silently never run, now does.

  • Online dictionaries stand beside local ones in the lookup panel: each installed online dictionary is a column of the switcher in your collection's order, asked at the same time as the local scan. One that has not answered within a moment yields to the first ready dictionary and takes its place when it arrives.

Online dictionaries beside your own, and one import for every word list

Added

  • Online dictionaries join the collection as ordinary rows: install Wiktionary and Wikipedia from Search & download, order them among your local dictionaries, and read their entries in the Library drawn in AALookup's own style. A website of your own can be added by address or imported from GoldenDict.
  • The lookup panel shows the first online dictionary that can be embedded and moves down the list when it cannot answer.
  • The search box completes from Wiktionary and Wikipedia as you type, below the local suggestions.
  • One import flow, from Settings or the Words page, reads TypeWords backups, AALookup bundles and word lists exported from Eudic and Youdao.

Improved

  • macOS Pointer lookup checks that the word's glyphs really sit under the pointer, and asks the application under the pointer when the system-wide hit test fails.
  • macOS With OCR off but Screen Recording granted, a lookup falls back to reading pixels for text that accessibility cannot see — code editors, canvases, games.
  • Windows The text recognized on the frozen screen can be corrected before copying, and Enter inserts a line break instead of copying the image.
  • The panel footer names what started the lookup — a three-finger tap or the shortcut that fired — and the context text can be selected and keeps its line breaks.

Fixed

  • Windows Sentence capture reads the whole sentence from the paragraph, so a sentence that wraps in the browser is no longer cut at the line break.
  • Three startup crashes are fixed: the first launch after an update on Windows, a Windows OCR line-ordering panic, and every launch after the first on Android. The server's hourly backup no longer stalls requests while it runs.
  • On Android, Update now survives the trip to the Install unknown apps setting and does not download the package again on retry.

Fixed

  • Windows On a Windows machine whose WebView2 had stopped updating, a dictionary entry arrived with none of the publisher's own styling or scripts while the rest of the app looked fine. Installing this version updates WebView2 when it is too old to load them.
  • An Android phone visiting the download page was recommended the macOS installer. The page guessed at iPad — which reports itself as a Mac with a touch screen — before reading the browser's own statement of which system it was.

Changed

  • “Ask on the web” opened Google's AI mode, which is not reachable from mainland China — and the shipped explanation language is Simplified Chinese, so for the people it was aimed at it was a button that timed out. It now opens Sogou's AI mode, with Metaso, Quark and Baidu Wenxin alongside it in the presets. A web address you chose yourself is left exactly as you left it, Google included.
  • A new installation now sends the sentence around the word to that site, not just the word on its own, because the sentence is the whole reason to ask a model rather than a dictionary. If you have used AALookup before, this setting is left exactly where you had it — an existing choice of “no” is indistinguishable from an untouched one, and guessing would send text somebody had withheld.
  • The Android build now requires Android 11. It could be installed on Android 7 before, several versions below where its own file handling starts working, so it could open and then fail to read a dictionary.

Adding a dictionary used to look like it worked and leave nothing behind. That, the panel's source list, and importing on Android are all fixed — and What's new now appears when an update actually arrives, with the notes for it before you install.

  • What's new can describe the release being offered to you, not only the ones already installed, so you can read what an update contains before deciding to take it.

Fixed

  • A dictionary added with “Add a dictionary…” showed up in Settings and was gone again on the next start. It never reached disk: saving replaced the whole dictionary list before the new row could be written into it. Every way of adding one now takes the same path a folder import takes, so it is durable before the button finishes.
  • Choosing a dictionary in the lookup panel's source list did nothing at all. The request was refused before it ran, so a word with entries in several dictionaries could not be read from the one you picked.
  • Version 0.7.0 sent everyone back to the first step of Getting Started, including people who had finished it a version ago — their practice erased, and on a phone no way out of it without signing in. Only a guide that was left unfinished starts again; a finished one stays finished.
  • What's new could not scroll, so everything below the first screen was out of reach — which is most of it, eleven releases in.
  • On Android, importing dictionary files from the setup guide had never worked: the file picker hands back locations no dictionary reader can open, and it failed far enough from the picker to read as a broken dictionary rather than a way in that never worked. The guide now uses the same folder import the Dictionaries screen already had, and asks whether to read a folder where it lies or copy it, before opening the picker.

Changed

  • What's new sits in the sidebar while an update is on its way, and until you have read about the release that just landed, marked while that is true. The rest of the time it stays out of the way. A link to it still works whichever way the sidebar looks.

Signing in is one motion now: a browser opens, you sign in, and AALookup finishes on its own. The device code stays as the fallback for when the browser never comes back.

Added

  • An agent connected through the MCP server can save a whole list of words to your vocabulary in one call. Each word succeeds or fails on its own, and a word you already have is left exactly as it was.
  • Experimental Android and iOS builds ship alongside this release on GitHub. They read your own MDict dictionaries, with a dictionary manager, settings and a reading layout built for a small screen. Neither is on Google Play or the App Store, parts of the desktop app are still missing, and the iOS build reaches testers only through TestFlight.
  • The official Android APK published on GitHub finds new versions and installs them. Other Android builds report that a new version exists but cannot install it themselves.

Fixed

  • The WordNet example dictionary no longer disappears from the downloads page. Publishing a release was deleting files the release itself had not put there.
  • Windows A link with more than one part to its address — one in a model's answer, for instance — now opens in full, instead of reaching the browser cut off partway through.
  • The app itself no longer zooms on a touch screen — neither a double tap nor a pinch scales the interface out from under you, and controls answer immediately instead of waiting to see whether a second tap is coming. Dictionary text keeps its own size setting.

Changed

  • Signing in no longer asks you to read a code back to the device that just showed it to you. Your browser opens the sign-in page, and the app takes it from there.
  • The device code stays out of sight while the browser sign-in is going fine, and appears only if the browser never comes back, or if you ask for it.
  • You can sign in from the Account & Sync card in Getting Started, instead of being sent to Settings to do it.
  • Getting Started now gives local dictionaries and your account a step each; before, one crowded step held both, and AI as well. AI explanations have left the guide and keep their section in Settings, with the same defaults.
  • Because those steps changed, the guide opens once more after this update and starts from the beginning, including its short practice steps. Nothing you have set up is lost, and it can still be skipped.

An AI agent on this computer can now be let into your own dictionaries: it looks words up through AALookup, shows you the entry, and helps you keep a large collection in order.

Added

  • AALookup can expose an MCP server that is off until you turn it on and listens only on this computer, and Settings ▸ Integrations sets up Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex / ChatGPT or WorkBuddy to use it.
  • A connected agent can look a word up in your installed dictionaries using the app's own spelling ladder, suggest headwords, and open a lookup in the panel or the Library for you to read.
  • A connected agent can also keep a large collection in order: creating, renaming and rearranging groups, moving dictionaries between them, changing the order they are searched in, and turning one on or off.
  • Results from a large collection can be narrowed to one dictionary group, through a searchable list that counts the hits in each group and everything beneath it.

Fixed

  • Search suggestions keep looking through your dictionaries until they have a list, instead of consulting one dictionary and leaving the rest behind a button.
  • The result dictionary bar holds still while a search runs: progress is a thin line along its edge, in place of a count that widened and pushed the tabs around.
  • Dictionaries that could not be opened are listed one per line in a panel that scrolls, so a long list no longer covers the settings above it.

Changed

  • How many dictionaries were searched, and how many could not be read, now appear when you point at or tap the count beside the result tabs, rather than in a block under the entries that could sit halfway up an empty page.

  • Dictionary entries keep their images, styles, and audio even when a publisher's own scripts rewrite URLs; dictionary names with spaces or non-Latin characters no longer break asset loading.
  • Right-click "Inspect Element" no longer shows up in the lookup panel, Library, or Settings — the web inspector now belongs to the tuning window alone.
  • The search field's clear button sits right beside the search button at every window density and language, instead of floating a couple dozen pixels away from it.
